OUR STORY

How unlikely is it that a man from North Dakota and a woman from Alabama would ever cross paths, let alone be happily married for over 25 years and build a business together?  Here is our story:

Tim was originally from Grand Forks, ND, and moved to New York in his early 20’s.  He became a New York City Policeman and later worked in Construction.  He learned to sail via celestial navigation and he and some friends took his boat, Valkyrie (Norweigian Heaven) from New York to Bermuda in 1980. In 1986 he was ready for a new adventure and set out for Ft. Lauderdale.

He lived on his boat for the first year in Ft. Lauderdale (a la Sonny Crocket) and enjoyed sailing, SCUBA diving and the warmer climate of South Florida.  He worked in construction and was promoted from the field to being Project Manager/Estimator with RJC and Associates, Inc.

Meanwhile, in December 1985, Lisa graduated from Auburn University with a degree in International Business and French which eventually landed her a job as a Sales Representative with an International Shipping Company, Sea-Land Services, Inc. in South Florida.

In 1989, one of her co-workers was having a Mardi Gras party which led to her meeting his neighbor, who happened to be the first person she had ever met from North Dakota, none other than Tim Egstad.  In August 1990, they got married in Tim’s hometown of Grand Forks, ND and both of their careers were going strong.  Tim took a new job as Chief Estimator with Lotspeich Construction, Inc. and Lisa was hired as Account Executive for BellSouth Telecommunication Services.

They had their first child, Cheyenne Louise, and bought their first house in 1994.  In 1996, their son Charles was born and life was good for a couple of years until they realized that South Florida was probably not the best place to raise children.  That and their desire to be near family led them to relocate across the country to St. Paul, Minnesota in 1998.  They bought a house with a big yard in Maplewood, MN where their kids enjoyed playing in the snow and they were close enough to visit their family on a regular basis.  They also got to know their Realtor and Lisa became interested in real estate.  After the kids were in school full-time, Lisa decided to get her license and joined Coldwell Banker Burnett in 2001.   

Although her real estate career was going well, after 5 years of living in the “frozen tundra”, Lisa was ready to move back south and discovered the community of Watercolor and the St. Joe company while online entering to win the HGTV dream home in NW Florida.  St Joe was hiring residential contractors, and although most Tim’s experience was in commercial construction, she was able to convince him to let her send his resume.  After all, Tim thought they would never call him all the way in Minnesota!

A few weeks later, Lisa and the kids were headed to the beach for Spring Break by car when Tim who was back in Minnesota, got the call from St. Joe for an interview.  He flew down to meet them, interviewed, and was hired to start just a few weeks later in April 2003.

Lisa stayed in Minnesota to get the house ready to go on the market and let the kids finish the school year.  After a brief time on the market, their Minnesota house was under contract just before a Mother’s Day trip to visit Tim, so it turned into a house hunting trip which resulted in the perfect house “under contract”.  Both houses closed in June and the Egstads were Florida residents!    

Tim built several homes in Watercolor while working for St. Joe and Lisa got her Florida Real Estate Broker’s license.  She worked for a couple of years as a Broker Associate for a boutique company specializing in Gulf-front properties before opening Champion Realty of the South in 2005.

In 2008, Tim was hired by Monte Hewett Homes out of Atlanta who was also building new homes at Watercolor, and later by EBSCO to build new homes in Alys Beach.  In 2010, Tim did a major renovation on a gulf-front home, discovered he has a passion for renovations and Champion Builders of the South, LLC was born.  He continues to do both renovations and new construction and has even expanded done some commercial construction again.    

In June 2013, Lisa accepted a position as Broker/Manager for a company out of Birmingham to open a Florida branch and successfully built a team of 18 agents.  In August 2015, Tim and Lisa celebrated their 25th wedding anniversary with a 9-day trip to the Southern California coast and joined forces as “The Champion Team” to build their businesses together and provide an all-inclusive real estate experience to their customers.
